Your two finish options

Diamond cut or powder coating: which do I need?

Most wheels need one of two finishes. Here is the short version, with the full details on each page.

Not sure which your wheels have? A diamond cut wheel has a shiny face with very fine lines in the metal. If you are still unsure, call your branch and we will help.

  • A refinished silver alloy wheel
    Back to factory silver.
  • A gloss black alloy wheel with gold accents
    A custom two-colour finish.

Step by step

How refurbishment works

Every wheel goes through the same careful stages in our workshop. Photos from Alloy Fix workshops.

  1. Sanding an alloy wheel to prepare it for a new finish

    Step 1: Check and strip

We check the wheel for damage, then strip and sand the old finish so we start from clean metal.

  2. A welded repair on the rim of an alloy wheel

    Step 2: Repair any damage

Kerb marks are smoothed out, and any cracks or buckles are repaired before refinishing.

  3. A wheel in the powder coating booth

    Step 3: Powder coat

The wheel is powder coated in your chosen colour and baked hard in the oven.

  4. An alloy wheel being diamond cut on the lathe

Step 4: Diamond cut and finish

Diamond cut wheels go on the lathe for a bright face, then get a clear lacquer. Every wheel is checked before it goes back on.

Colours and finishes

Pick your colour

Powder coating comes in a wide range of colours, so you can bring back the original look or change it completely:

  • Gloss: a shiny finish that stands out.
  • Satin: a soft sheen for a modern look.
  • Matt: a flat finish with no shine.
  • Metallic: a fine sparkle, like many factory finishes.
  • Custom colours: matched to a colour reference or paint code.

Repair or refurbishment?

Is your wheel damaged?

If your wheels just look tired or you want a new colour, refurbishment is the right choice.

If your wheel is damaged rather than just tired-looking, with a crack, a buckle or a dent, see alloy wheel repair. We fix the damage first, then refinish the wheel.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between diamond cut and powder coating?

Diamond cutting uses a lathe to take a very thin layer off the face of the wheel, which leaves bright metal with fine lines, sealed with clear lacquer. Powder coating covers the whole wheel in one solid colour that is baked hard in an oven. Diamond cut suits wheels that had a shiny two-tone face from the factory. Powder coating suits a solid colour or a change of look.

How long does alloy wheel refurbishment take?

It depends on the finish and how many wheels you book in. Your branch will confirm the timings when you book. You can add loan wheels to your booking so you can keep driving while we work.

Will my refurbished wheels match the rest of the set?

If you are only refurbishing some of your wheels, tell us when you book. Powder coat colours can be matched to a colour reference or paint code, and we refinish diamond cut wheels to the original style. For the best match, many people refurbish all four wheels at once.

What warranty do you offer on refurbishment?

Powder coating and diamond cut refurbishments come with a 3 year warranty. We are the only company to offer a 3 year warranty on all powder coating and diamond cut wheels. Crack repairs have a separate 1 year warranty.
